EXPLORE OUR VALLEYS

The scenery of the Lake District can often be seen at its best in the valleys, broad stretches of green fields and woodland with traditional styles of buildings. Villages and hamlets in picturesque settings offer accommodation and refreshments. Explore the winding lanes around Borrowdale, Newlands, Buttermere and St Johns in the Vale. Peaceful river and meadow walks can be found meandering through the valleys, with views of the surrounding craggy fells & mountains adding a touch of grandeur to the views.

OUR MOUNTAINS & FELLS

Keswick and the Northern Lakes must be one of the most dramatic landscapes in Britain with its spectacular array of mountains all in such a compact area. Close at hand are the four highest mountains in England, over 3000 feet high. The Scafells, with their rugged outlines of volcanic rock dominate the central area while Helvellyn and Skiddaw's smoother slopes reflect the softer geology. These form an impressive background to the no less spectacular lower hills, or fells, and the beautiful valleys with their lakes below.

OUR LAKES

To most visitors, it's the magnificence of the lakes which brings that special distinction to the scenery. Their ever changing nature, light & reflections transform the countryside, whatever the weather. Derwentwater, island studded and with Keswick on its shores is probably the busiest.Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater lie close together in the lovely and peaceful Vale of Lorton. Bassenthwaite Lake, the only 'lake', and Thirlmere, reservoir for Manchester, are both dominated by steep slopes of shoreline mountains.

OUR VILLAGES

The heart of Keswick is the Market Square with no cars in the pedestrianised area which makes for a very pleasant shopping experience. In the centre of the Market Square is The Moot Hall, home to the Lake District National Park Tourist Information Centre and an excellent starting point for planning your adventures. Though only a small town, Keswick has a range of shops and services far larger than might be expected. You can find lots of lovely shops both in the main Market Square and down every alley and side street.
